The ‘Benaocaz Slaughterhouse – Roadmap’ project examines the conditions required to restore a local infrastructure serving the region’s sheep and goat farming sector.
The Sierra de Cádiz has close ties to extensive livestock farming and to products such as lamb and goat. However, the lack of local processing facilities means that animals have to be transported to slaughterhouses further afield, which increases transport distances and makes it difficult to market these products through short supply chains.
At Serranías Vivas, we are working to understand the needs of the livestock sector and of those who sell and consume these products, and to analyse whether the revival of the abattoir could offer a viable and useful solution for the region.
The project combines a study of supply and demand with a technical and economic analysis. This information will be used to draw up a roadmap to guide decision-making and define the next steps towards a possible launch.
What we do
Project objectives
- To assess the feasibility of reopening the Benaocaz abattoir for sheep and goats.
- To understand the production capacity and needs of livestock farms in the region.
- To identify the demand from butchers, restaurants, accommodation providers and other establishments.
- To examine the facilities, services and resources required for its operation.
- To analyse the costs and financial conditions required to sustain the business in the long term.
- To promote collaboration between production, processing and marketing.
- To support extensive livestock farming and the promotion of local produce.
What actions are going to be taken?
- Analysis of livestock supply and demand for sheep and goat meat products in the region.
- Gathering information and assessing needs amongst livestock farmers, associations, butchers, and hotels and restaurants.
- Technical study of the facilities, equipment, logistics and requirements necessary for the activity.
- Economic feasibility study, including start-up and operating costs and a forecast of business activity.
- Discussions with the relevant stakeholders to explore organisational and management options.
- Preparation and dissemination of conclusions and a roadmap to guide the next steps.
